Gear & Currency is a new supplement for SLAYERS. Add some extra spice to your hunts with items that grant new abilities and change the way you hunt.

Choose from six types of Gear:

  • Alchemy Kit - A collection of vials, balms, beakers, mixers, and other sorts of things alchemists need to make the potions they make.
  • Book of Prayers - A book of prayers to an unknown god. The person you bought it from swore it would bring you good luck (and that it’s definitely not haunted).
  • Flamethrower - A strange contraption that hurls potion mixture out of a nozzle. There’s a small flame that lights the potion mixture as it leaves and burns whatever (and whoever) it touches.
  • Grappling Hook - It looks like a small gun with a claw at the end. It shoots out an impossibly long wire and the claw always grabs onto a surface. It’s a marvel of technology (or maybe magic).
  • Scoped Crossbow - It’s a crossbow with a scope on it. It can only use the most advanced bolts (likely involving some sort of enchantments). Only the most skilled Slayers even attempt to use it, but those who do swear by it.
  • Specialized Armor - A fine set of armor means getting hurt hurts a little less. Some Slayers wear full plate mail as they fight against monsters, but most opt for a more modest approach. Either way, this armor will make this Slayer stand out among their peers.

Gear adds complexity to the mechanics of combat while still maintaining the same fast feel. Each Gear comes with its own Attack and Quick actions that let you manipulate the battlefield in new ways. You can even upgrade your favorite Gear with new enhancements.

Pros:

What a unique and well-polished addition to the game! Right off the bat we have essential gear that makes everything better (Grappling Hook! Flamethrower! Scoped Crossbow! Standards that remain standards because they OOZE flavor).

We keep the abstract nature of Slayers in "Scrip", a handwaved currency. We have rules for next-of-kin, which I just adore so thoroughly. It reinforces the idea that you are dangerous folks doing dangerous things.

We maintain a sense of balance and simplicity by restricting 1 gear to each Slayer and having maintenance costs. The gear itself is fun, useful, and somehow dripping with even more flavor and cool factor than the base items themselves.

I should also mention that this product is cleanly laid out, with an original color scheme and style that is reminiscent of Slayers while still being its own thing. Everything is easy to read and elegant.

Cons:

There are a couple minor typos, and it's a little odd to me that I have to pay 1 scrip to remove my Book of Prayers, but that's an extremely minor quibble on an otherwise excellent product.

Summary:

This is an excellent supplement for Slayers that adds a unique layer of tactical combat, as well as powerful flexibility for Slayers. It allows for rewards, instead of handwaving currency like the base game, and is extremely flavorful while it does it! This is absolutely worth the asking price for any Slayers fan.

Thanks so much for the review! I really appreciate it.

Also, to answer you question about the Book of Prayer, the downside to the Book of Prayer is that it’s inconsistent but you have to use it. If you don’t, you can take damage or even instantly die. It kind of blurs the line between blessing and curse.

So because of that, it can’t be something you can just get rid of. Otherwise, you could just throw it away if it gets to be too much trouble.

Plus, I really like the idea of a cursed item being something you can’t just throw away. It takes a ritual or spell to prevent it from appearing again. And the scholar won’t do that until you make it worth their while.

That totally makes sense!
